Shadow Puppetry and Showmanship

July 20, 2011

EMBATTLED former newspaper executive Rebekah Brooks was dramatically arrested by anti-corruption detectives yesterday, throwing into chaos MPs’ plans to grill her over the phone hacking scandal.

The arrest means Rebekah Brooks, former editor of the News of the World and The Sun, may not be able to appear as planned before a committee of MPs tomorrow.

Even if she can appear, her questioning could be severely curtailed because of legal proceedings.

Angry committee members questioned whether the timing of the arrest was a “ruse” designed to thwart the planned Commons inquisition.

Mrs Brooks, 43, who quit last week as chief executive of News International, voluntarily walked into a London police station after taking a call from Scotland Yard on Friday asking her to meet officers investigating hacking allegations.

Her spokesman said she was not expecting to be arrested and called the move “quite a surprise”.

The shock development came two days after Mrs Brooks finally bowed to huge public pressure and agreed both to quit as chief executive and to appear before the MPs on the culture, media and sport committee along with her former bosses, media mogul Rupert Murdoch and his son James.

EUROCRATS are set to provoke a fresh storm today by proposing EU control over British armed forces and a coastguard covering all of Europe.

Baroness Ashton, EU foreign affairs supremo, will unveil plans for a permanent “command and control” HQ, possibly sited in Britain.

Under a separate plan a new pan-European coastal fleet is proposed which will patrol under the Brussels logo flag.

Tory MP Douglas Carswell, whose Clacton constituency coastguard station faces closure, said: “Politicians keep telling us that there will be no more transfer of power to Brussels. Once again, this shows those promises are complete nonsense.”
