Tim Oates said schools ought to choose whether or not to teach the subject as he called for the curriculum to “get back to the science in science”.
Mr Oates, whose review will be published later this year, told a newspaper the syllabus should be stripped back to focus on core areas of scientific knowledge such as gravity and oxidation. He said teachers should instead be able to make individual choices about what topics are relevant for them to cover.
“We have believed that we need to keep the national curriculum up to date with topical issues, but oxidation and gravity don’t date,” he said. “We are not taking it back 100 years, we are taking it back to the core stuff.
“The curriculum has become narrowly instrumentalist.”
Mr Oates, who is director of research at exams agency Cambridge Assessment, told The Guardian: “The national curriculum shouldn’t ever try to keep up with those, otherwise it would keep changing.”
He said the topics that engaged children in science changed dramatically every year and the curriculum should not try to keep up with that.
His comments mark a shift in approach to the curriculum, which under Labour expanded significantly to include scientific “issues” as well as scientific knowledge.
Under the current curriculum, children aged between five and 11, are taught that they should care for the environment.
By the time they reach secondary school age students are taught how human activity and natural processes can lead to environmental changes.
They also learn about the ways the natural world should be protected.
Climate change has featured in the national curriculum since 1995.
In 2007, the topics “cultural understanding of science” and “applications and implications of science” were added to the curriculum for 11- to 14-year-olds.
Come to think of it there are one or two other parts of science curriculum that need scrapping. Like the module that focuses on vaccines and how wonderful they are and how they save lives. Did GSK pay to receive a special mention in the module I studied back in 2006-7? (Still have the textbook.) I wonder.

Spook Operation – Fake Lesbian Blogger in Syria
Whoever did this took a photo of a Croatian woman in London and used it to represent a (fictional) Syrian blogger who was also a US citizen.
On Tuesday news outlets across the globe reported
the story of Amina Arraf, who it was claimed wrote a blog called ‘A Gay Girl in
Damascus’, a mixture of erotic prose and updates about Syria’s uprising,
including her participation in anti-regime protests.
Who would ghost write lesbian “erotic prose”?
I would make meye6 chief suspect based on the Mail’s deflecting headline:
Does kidnapped U.S. lesbian blogger in Syria actually exist… or did she steal London woman’s identity?

UK Police Consider Strike

Britain’s police forces will go on strike again in protest at the coalition government’s plans to cut spending, which are hitting the public hard, reports said.Thousands of police officers angry over the government’s spending cuts’ program are organizing a national day of action, according to British media reports.
It is expected that representatives of each force gather at Methodist Central Hall in Westminster on July 13 before a two-hour lobbying event with politicians to discuss the industrial action plan, the reports said.
Home Secretary Theresa May will be invited to the event, the Police Federation of England and Wales said.
“The open meeting will form part of our ongoing campaign to show the government our very real concerns about the impact their current plans will have for the future of policing and those tasked with delivering it, as well as the implications for public safety,” said Simon Reed, the federation’s vice-chairman.
The day of action comes after the Home Secretary refused to relent on her police cuts during her annual keynote speech to police chiefs.

Humans To Become Pets, Says Apple Co-Founder
As technology explodes, humans are not going to be needed so much in the future and will settle back into a life of ease, Mr Wozniak told a business congress on the Gold Coast on Friday.
“We’re already creating the superior beings, I think we lost the battle to the machines long ago,” he said.
“We’re going to become the pets, the dogs of the house.”
He said all of a sudden, true artificial intelligence will creep up on mankind like an accident.
“Every time we create new technology we’re creating stuff to do the work we used to do and we’re making ourselves less meaningful, less relevant.
“Why are we going to need ourselves so much in the future? We’re just going to have the easy life,” he said.
Mr Wozniak said Singularity, where a machine seems like a human being and has feelings, can think and be motivated, seemed an impossible dream to him years ago.
When he started Apple, he said, he never thought a computer would be powerful enough to hold an entire song and today we can fit 50 movies on a little disc in an iPhone.
“You don’t realise it’s happened until it’s there and I think that awareness of machines is getting very, very close and we’re getting close to where a machine will really understand you,” Mr Wozniak said.
“My comment about the machines winning the war is partly a joke, but we’ve accidentally already put so much in place that we can’t get rid of from our lives.
“Once we have machines doing our high-level thinking, there’s so little need for ourselves and you can’t ever undo it – you can never turn them off.”

Jewish Settlers Torch Mosque Near Ramallah
Local residents of Al Mughayyir village, near the central West Bank city of Ramallah, reported Tuesday at dawn that fundamentalist settlers set the local mosque ablaze, and wrote racist graffiti on it walls, the Palestine Today reported.
Witnesses stated that the Israeli settlers set fire to the mosque at approximately 3 A.M. on Wednesday, before daubing the remains with racist slogans.
The attack on the al-Mughayyir village’s mosque has drawn condemnation from a wide variety of groups in Palestinian civil society. This is the third mosque that has been torched in as many years.
The arson attack is thought to be a ‘price-tag’ attack, carried out by nearby settlers in response to the demolition of ‘Alei Ayin’ illegal outpost by Israeli police recently. One piece of graffiti explicitly stated ‘price tag’ followed by ‘Alei Ayin’ in Hebrew.
The settlers are believed to have come from the Adi Gilad illegal settlement built on private Palestinian lands only three kilometres away from the mosque.
Resident Jihad Al Na’san told France Press that the residents went to the mosque to perform dawn prayers to find it burning down while the flames were streaming out of its windows.
Al Na’san added that the settlers dumped tires in the mosque and torched them, and that the Israeli army and the police arrived at the scene later on as the area is under Israeli military and security control.
Al Na’san further stated that the residents found racist graffiti written in Hebrew stating “We will raze this village” among other racist slurs against the Arabs and the Palestinians.
Mahmoud al-Habbash, the Minister of Religious Affairs in the Palestinian Authority, stated that the arson “indicates the magnitude of the aggression settlers unleash on holy places”. Rebuilding of the mosque is expected to begin immediately.
The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Sheikh Mohammad Hussein, visited the site of the destroyed mosque and said that, “[T]he attack on this mosque is part of a systematic policy aiming to flame the conflict and show disrespect to the religious and human values of others.”
The National Christian Coalition in the Holy Land has also strongly condemned the arson attack. Its president, Dimitri Diliani blamed the ongoing occupation and lack of law enforcement against settlers, noting, “[O]ccupation commits limitless crimes using different means including extremist settlers who are protected by Israeli forces. They do not show any respect to morals, religions, or laws when it comes to attacks against the Palestinian people.”
A month ago, the settlers torched a mosque near the northern West Bank city of Ramallah.
Last year, a group of fundamentalist Israeli settlers broke into a mosque in Beit Fajjar, near Bethlehem, and set it ablaze. Settlers also torched the main mosque of the al-Lubban al-Sharqiyya village, south of the northern West Bank city of Nablus.
In 2009, settlers torched a mosque in Yasuf Palestinian village, near the central West Bank city of Salfit.
